Frank
Meadow Sutcliffe, the talented son of a Victorian era artist created,
over the latter years of the 19th century, a priceless collection of
photographic images of the people & places of the Yorkshire coast,
particularly around the small fishing village of Whitby where he had
set up a photographic studio in a small disused factory.

Please have a look around this site and email us with any questions you may have. Inside you will find extraordinary photographs recorded between about 1870 through to the early 1900s. The people were local folk engaged in ordinary day to day life at work or play, both in the maritime and rural environments as well as around the townships of this fascinating area of the world. The ships & boats so artfully portrayed in Frank Sutcliffe's work were honest, hard working craft shown long before they became "fashionable", in the days when ships and the crews that manned them worked hard. Perfect for the home, as a gift for the very special friend or as a superb corporate display, Frank Sutcliffe's prints are cherished wherever they are shown. |
