Gallery Six of the Work of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe of Whitby

A sixth splendid display of brilliant photography in the collection from Frank Sutcliffe.

Frank Sutcliffe's photographs are a rare insight into the life of folk from an era which didn't get a lot of exposure for the ordinary people. His work allows us to peek into these lives and enjoy the unique flavour of North Yorkshire in the late 19th century. When you find something you like, please note the catalogue numbers and proceed to the Order Page.

All prints are produced from the original glass plate negatives.

Note that the images shown on this site do not approach the incredible sharpness and quality of the final print available to you when you order these very collectable and historic prints.

Staithes circa 1875

'Staithes circa 1875' Catalogue No.51:
A North Yorkshire coastal village steeped in history and legend. The Cod and Lobster Inn, around which the figures in the distance are grouped, has been washed into the sea on four occasions, the last being in 1953.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).

Crag and Lower Harbour

'Crag and Lower Harbour'; Catalogue No.52:
The camera point for this commanding view over Whitby town was Spion Cop. Although a technically superb photograph, the original negative is unfortunately extremely blemished. Other photographs taken by Sutcliffe from the same viewpoint but without the smoke and hazy sunlight lose much of the mystery inherent in this image. A very interesting & atmospheric photograph.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).

Jet Workers, Whitby

'Jet Workers, Whitby'; Catalogue No.53:
This photograph, one of the very few in existence, has been much reproduced over the years in television, books and magazines. During the latter half of the nineteenth century the manufacture of jewellery from locally mined jet was one of Whitby's main industries. Situated in Haggersgate and owned by William Wright, this was the only jet workshop equipped with gas-engine powered lathes.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).

Market Place, Whitby 1884

'Market Place, Whitby 1884'; Catalogue No54:
Whitby Market Place with the Old Town Hall in the background. From an original whole plate negative by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe. Rents for the market stalls were collected by John the Bellaman, on behalf of of the Lord of the Manor and tenants paid from 1s. 6d. to 2s. 0d. per day.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).

New Road, Robin Hoods Bay
'New Road, Robin Hoods Bay'; Catalogue No.55:
The groups of figures and receding planes of the houses huddled into the cliff side add much to this atmospheric photograph. A small fishing village clinging to the steep cliffs of the North Yorkshire coast, legend has it that Robin Hood's Bay was named after the outlaw and that it formed a safe retreat when Nottinghamshire became too dangerous for him and his 'Merry Men'. It was also a favourite landing for smugglers until the Revenue became too efficient to make it a worthwhile profession.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).

Harbourside Family

'Harbourside Family' Catalogue No.56
This photograph of the Dryden family was taken at the landward end of Tate Hill Pier, Whitby Lower Harbour, in 1901. The young girl at left is Jane Elizabeth or 'Jinnie', leaning against her father Tom whose hand is resting on his son William's shoulder. In the basket is John Robert, born on 9th January 1901 (died 20th May 1960). The basket is being held by his mother Mary Ann and sitting behind her on the harbour rail is Tom or 'Tut'. John Robert later gained the nickname 'Stow' by stowing away, at the age of five on the trawler on which his father was a crew member.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).

Running Repairs

'Running Repairs' Catalogue No.57
Part of Sutcliffe's genius was his ability to direct his subjects so as to appear totally lacking in camera-consciousness. This delightful study of boys playing with a model boat near the bow of a fishing coble was taken at Runswick Bay. It was one of a selection of photographs exhibited at The Royal Photographic Society on January 2nd 1901.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).

High Seas on Whitby's West Pier

'High Seas on Whitby's West Pier' Catalogue No.58
Before the addition of the pier extensions were built around 1912, the much older stone piers, one of which is seen here, took the full brunt of the sea's force. The low rail running along the right side of the pier acted as a rubbing strip for the ropes which were used by gangs of men and boys to tow becalmed sailing vessels up the harbour. A dramatic shot popular with lighthouse fans.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).
and LARGE (300 x 400mm; 12" x 16").

'A Fish Stall at Whitby' Catalogue No. 59
Taken on New Quay by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, Hon. F.R.P.S. (1853-1941), internationally famous photographer of the Victorian era and to whom this web site is dedicated. Tom Gaines, in the peaked cap, fished with harbourmaster John Knight in the herring mule 'The Coffee Bar'. The woman on his right is Dolly, a fish stall owner.Eliza Cummins is on his left. The stall was owned by a Mrs Wilson (second from left), known locally as 'Nell Baccus'. At extreme left is Mrs Eleanor Locker.

Available in small (114 x 152mm), medium (210 x 276mm)

Limpets

'Limpets' Catalogue No. 60
Two teenage girls on The Scaur, a beach formed of bedrock, near Whitby's East Cliff. This photograph, by Frank Sutcliffe, was probably taken around the year 1880. Limpets or 'flithers' are molluscs that cling firmly to rocks. They were collected as bait by the fisherwomen - hence the term 'flither picking'.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).
