Sutcliffe Gallery AustraliaFrank Meadow Sutcliffe

Gallery Five of the Work of Frank Meadow Sutcliffe of Whitby

A fifth splendid display of brilliant photography in the collection from Frank Sutcliffe.

Frank Sutcliffe's photographs represent a priceless slice of history which had not otherwise been well recorded, certainly not with this degree of sensitivity and accuracy. If you would like to share in this historic treasure trove, please note the catalogue numbers and proceed to the Order Page.

All prints are produced from the original glass plate negatives.

Note that the images shown on this site do not approach the incredible sharpness and quality of the final print available to you when you order these very collectable and historic prints.

Morning

'Morning' Catalogue No.41:
Sutcliffe explains: "Is a copy from a silver print; we unfortunately broke the negative, so I had to copy the best print we had left. The "Winter's Morning" was taken at 12noon on December 21st". A superbly artistic composition with an almost unreal feeling to it when viewed closely.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).

The Ingathering

'The Ingathering'; Catalogue No.42:
One of Sutcliffe's masterly rural compositions. Taken around 1895 at Four Lane Ends farm, Whitby. At one time the farm incorporated a tollgate through which Bonnie Prince Charlie is reputed to have passed one stormy night. True or not, this is a superbly directed and composed photograph with a beautiful range of tonal gradations.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).

Trees in a Misty Valley

'Trees in a Misty Valley'; Catalogue No.43:
This photograph gained an award when exhibited at Tokyo in 1893. A composition which under almost any other lighting and atmospheric conditions would be mundane, becomes a thing of beauty under the inluence of a 'sea fret' - a coastal fog frequently experienced on the North Sea coast.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).

Milk Donkey

'Milk Donkey'; Catalogue No44:
The donkey, 'Jane Trotter' is carrying two churns of milk slung over her back. It is reputed that she knew the milk round as well as her master, John Marwood, seen here standing behind her. He had a small-holding at Ewe Cote close to where the Sutcliffe family lived for a number of years.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).

Drinkings
'Drinkings'; Catalogue No.45:
Probably taken at Lealholm Hall Farm. A group of haymakers amongst whom are Alice Chambers, Tailor Bill Readman and Willie Wren. At first sight a group of people caught purely by chance, but on further study it is apparent that a considerable amount of effort and vision has gone into this composition.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).

Catching Newts

'Catching Newts' Catalogue No.46
Two of Frank Sutcliffe's children. Horace and Irene fishing for newts in a pond at Hart Hall Farm, Glaisdale. Sutcliffe took many of his rural masterpieces in the Esk Valley.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).

Beggar's Bridge

'Beggar's Bridge' Catalogue No.47
This pack-bridge over the river Esk is a well known local feature. The romantic legend built up around this bridge at Glaisdale centres on a poor boy of the village who wished to marry the daughter of a well-to-do family living on the opposite side of the River Esk. His wooing was discouraged by the girl's father, so to prove his merit the boy left home to win the proverbial fortune, did so, returned home and to show that he was now a worthy contender for the girl of his dreams, built the bridge across the river. This photograph by Frank Sutcliffe, does full justice the suitor's endeavours.

Available in small (114 x 152mm)

Milk Maid

'Milk Maid' Catalogue No.48
Lorna McNeil of Longstone Farm, Low Hawsker circa 1902. The McNeil family later emigrated to White Rock, Canada.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).

Barn Door Fowls

'Barn Door Fowls' Catalogue No. 49
A beautiful study to tweak the nostalgic memories of any country person. At Lealholm Hall Farm in the Esk Valley. The Lealholm, Lealholmside and Glaisdale areas in the Esk Valley were Sutcliffe's happy hunting grounds for rural subjects.

Available in small (114 x 152mm), medium (210 x 276mm)

Among the Turnips

'Among the Turnips' Catalogue No. 50
A fine rural landscape by Frank Meadow Sutcliffe, Hon. F.R.P.S. Part of Sutcliffe's success in producing his memorable photographs was due to his mastery of the whole plate camera and early photographic materials. Over and above this though was his unerring eye for composition and his sensitivity to the nuances of lighting. All the elements surely come together in this picture. Sutcliffe is believed to have titled this photograph 'Man goeth forth to his labour until the evening' but we are not certain about this.

Available in small (114 x 152mm) and medium (210 x 276mm).
